Downtown Design Workshop: A Time To Celebrate!

 In News, Project updates

We’ve come so far.

Last June, Strong at Heart began a community conversation with all Taoseños about what we love and cherish about Taos. These conversations resulted in a set of shared community values that provide guidance to local leaders when making important decisions about Taos’ future.

Invoking our community values, Strong at Heart then initiated a more specific conversation about our downtown. What kind of place do we want it to be? How can it support a thriving community? From these conversations emerged a set of goals that can shape change in the downtown over time.

Now, Strong at Heart invites you to the Downtown Design Workshop. This is your chance to review and refine specific strategies and design concepts that advance Taoseños goals for the downtown.  The workshop will be held Monday through Thursday, May 14 – 17, 2018.

The Downtown Design Workshop is an opportunity for everyone in Taos to see how their input over the last year is helping to influence the physical, economic and social potential of downtown. Your participation and input is important!

Working alongside planning and design professionals, you’ll be able to review and refine specific ideas for downtown that touch on important community issues like:

  • Parking
  • A downtown trail network.
  • The character and type of development in the downtown.
  • Transforming public spaces to create and strengthen our community.

Key events associated with the Downtown Design Workshop events include:

  1. Walkability Workshop / Monday, May 14 / 3:00pm-6:30pm / The Hub (107 Civic Plaza Drive)

This workshop will serve as an opportunity for community members to assess the “walkability” of six areas within and around the downtown. Participants will convene at the HUB, and then break off into groups to tour their area of interest. While on tour, participants will take notes about what seems to work, and what could work better, and then meet back at the HUB to share notes and debrief. Ideas generated by participants during the Walkability Workshop will be used to inform design concepts for the downtown. The Walkability Workshop is being hosted by the Taos Land Trust and UNM-Taos.

  1. Downtown Design Workshop Drop-In Hours / 4:30pm-6:30pm / The Hub (107 Civic Plaza Drive)

Join the Strong at Heart team at the Hub on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday (May 14, 15, and 16) anytime between 4:30 and 6:30PM to review and comment on design concepts prepared for the downtown. This is an opportunity for you to share questions, comments, opinions and feedback you have on the design concepts being presented.

  1. Civic Plaza Drive Street Party / Thursday, May 17 / 5:30pm-7:30pm / Civic Plaza Drive

Party on! The Civic Plaza Street Party celebrates the finale of the Downtown Design Workshop. Make your way down to Civic Plaza Drive to view a showcase of all the downtown design concepts that emerged over the course of the week. After a short presentation, Strong at Heart project partners will be demonstrating street safety improvements that could help make Taos’ streets safer for walking and biking. They will also demonstrate street activation tactics, which can help bring more energy, inclusion and activity into downtown streets. Most of all, the Street Party is a time to celebrate!
